Sinner recovers from first-set bagel to beat Karatsev in Lyon

Italian teenager Jannik Sinner recovered from a first-set bagel to beat Aslan Karatsev and claim his place in the quarter-finals of the Open Parc Auverne-Rhone-Alpes in Lyon on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old was blitzed in the first set by the world No 25 but showed his mental strength to level and then, after a rain delay at 2-1 down in the third, pulled away to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“Today definitely I was struggling in the beginning, especially in the first set,” Sinner said. “But I tried to take a bit of time, then the rain came so it was not easy but I can say I’m very happy.”

Sinner will play either top seed Dominic Thiem or Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals.
