Max Caldas heads to Spain as hockey coaches secure positions

Max Caldas has been unveiled as the new Spanish men’s coach following the Tokyo Olympics.

Argentinian Caldas, 48, announced he was leaving Oranje men last year.

He will take over from Fred Soyez, the Frenchman who leaves after seven years as national coach. He is mooted as the next France coach, who will see Jeroen Delmee leave after next month’s EuroHockey.

In a neat case of coaching musical chairs, Delmee will replace Caldas as Dutch men’s coach.

Caldas will become the first Argentinian to coach a Spanish national side.

“We have chosen a very successful and prestigious coach, who will certainly bring us many successes,” the Spanish hockey federation said.

Meanwhile, Germany women’s coach Xavier Reckinger has extended his contract with the German Hockey Association until the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The 36-year-old Belgian took over from Jamilon Mülders in 2017 and last year led the Danas to third in the FIH Pro League and EuroHockey runners-up.
