Liverpool open to selling Nat Phillips this summer

Liverpool open to selling Nat Phillips this summer

Phillips’ Liverpool stint

Nat Phillips joined Liverpool on a free transfer in 2016, after departing Bolton’s youth ranks.

After making the switch to Merseyside, Phillips spent a few years honing his craft in Liverpool’s youth ranks, before being loaned out to VfB Stuttgart for the 2019/20 campaign.

The now 24-year-old featured 22 times for Stuttgart before returning to Anfield last summer.

Despite having enjoyed a decent stint in Germany, though, it looked altogether unlikely that Phillips would go on to earn regular football back on Merseyside this season.

But, after Liverpool experienced some horrible injury luck, the stopper soon established himself as a regular in the Reds’ backline.

All of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip were forced onto the sidelines for lengthy spells across 2020/21.

And when Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were tasked with filling the void at centre-back, they too picked up issues, with Henderson having only returned this weekend vs Crystal Palace.

In turn, Jurgen Klopp opted to use Phillips at the heart of his backline on a consistent basis over recent months.

All told, the 24-year-old featured on 20 occasions this season, with 17 of his appearances having come in the Premier League, and three in the Champions League.

Liverpool could sell Phillips

And whilst Phillips obviously isn’t at the level of a van Dijk, he nevertheless formed a decent partnership with Ozan Kabak over the second half of the season.

Despite such efforts, however, the stopper’s future with Liverpool now looks completely in the air.

According to a report from the Sun, Liverpool will sell Phillips in the summer, but only if they receive a considerable offer.

No potential suitors are mentioned in the piece, but it is claimed that the former Bolton man could command a £10m fee.
