Leeds United host old rivals Manchester United in the Premier League this afternoon – in what is the sides’ first top-flight meeting at Elland Road since 2003. The match takes place amid the fallout from the proposed Super League, with Manchester United fans protesting against the club’s owners for their involvement in the controversial plans outside Old Trafford on Saturday.
Co-owner Joel Glazer has apologised to supporters for their role in the breakaway competition, but that did not stop a group of fans from entering the club’s Carrington training base in an anti-Glazer demonstration earlier this week. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted his side were “physically and mentally” ready ahead of the match, despite the distractions of the past seven days, in what is the club’s first match since the Super League plans were formally announced on Sunday.
And ahead of the visit to Elland Road, Solskjaer said he has had made sure his team were aware of the significance of the fixture. “We know the history about the Leeds of the old days, Super Leeds, that was the generation before mine. I’ve played in some massive games against Leeds. We had a proper challenge from that team in early 2000s.”

22 mins: Rashford and Shaw combine again on the Manchester United left wing. Rashford carries the ball forward before slotting it out wide to Shaw and darting inside off the ball. Shaw gives it back to him and Rashford dummies, then lets fly only for his effort to be charged down by Luke Ayling who has had a decent opening 20 minutes or so for Leeds.

Penalty shout for Leeds!
19 mins: There’s a VAR check for a possible penalty against Luke Shaw. Leeds break quickly up the pitch with Jack Harrison carrying the ball into the left side of the penalty area. He chips the ball into the middle towards Patrick Bamford but the striker misses it and the ball strikes Shaw on the top of his left arm. The Leeds players all appeal to Craig Pawson as VAR starts the check but Shaw’s arm was in a natural position and the home doesn’t get the decision.

16 mins: There is a nice easy tempo to the game with some decent battles developing. Marcus Rashford seems to believe he can get the better of Luke Ayling on Manchester United’s left wing and he’s happy to take him on at any opportunity. So far though Ayling have been up to the task as he takes the ball off Rashford after Luke Shaw fed it up to him.

Chance for Harry Maguire!
12 mins: Manchester United win a free kick over to the left of Leeds’ penalty area. Bruno Fernandes fires the free kick sharply into the front of the six-yard box. Patrick Bamford is back to defend for Leeds but the ball sails past him and falls to Harry Maguire. Maguire seems shocked that the ball actually reached him and he doesn’t react quickly enough to turn it towards goal. Instead the ball strikes his right shin and goes wide.

9 mins: Fred has got properly stuck into the action in the middle of the park. He’s thrown himself into a bunch of different contests, trying to be a nuisance for the Leeds midfielders. This time he shoulders into Tyler Roberts and gives away a free kick. He needs to be careful about being too forceful though or else he’ll be in danger of picking up a card.

Rashford gets in on goal
6 mins: Victor Lindelof sends a perfect ball up the pitch for Marcus Rashford as he makes a darting run in behind the Leeds defence from the inside left. The ball comes over the top and Rashford controls it well. He’s forced into the right side of the penalty area by the back-tracking Leeds centre-backs. Rahsford shoots but scuffs the shot and sends it harmlessly wide of the far post.

4 mins: Stuart Dallas is brought down on the right wing by Fred and like Manchester United Leeds have an early free kick that they can work into the box. Kalvin Phillips whips in the cross but can’t pick out a colleague as Fred kicks the ball away. The home side regain possession quickly and keep up the pressure only for Marcus Rashford to win the ball and then get fouled by Jack Harrison.

Leeds vs Manchester United kick off
Kick off: Manchester United get the game underway. Fred brings the ball down the left wing and comes against Tyler Roberts. The two tussle over the ball with Fred going to ground and winning a free kick. Bruno Fernandes swings the set piece into the Leeds penalty area and Mason Greenwood breaks free of his marker to win the header. He gets a decent connection on the ball but can’t generate enough power to beat Illan Meslier who claims the ball easily enough.
