Iga Swiatek produced a statement win ahead her French Open title defence, thrashing Karolina Pliskova 6-0 6-0 to win the Italian Open.

Swiatek was at her ruthless best and lost just 13 points in a ruthless demolition of the world No. 9.

The Pole, 19, has now climbed into the top-10 for the first time after sealing her third WTA title after just 45 minutes.

Few finals have been as one-sided as this. Pliskova, the 2019 champion, struggled to get any grip on the match and won four of her 13 points in the final game.

Pliskova was unable to avoid the double bagel as Swiatek set down a marker ahead of the French Open later this month.

‘You know, I’m really happy. I’m overwhelmed. At the beginning of this tournament I wouldn’t even dream of winning. It was super tough, we had to fight a lot of stuff.

‘Karolina obviously had a great run here and in previous years she’s showing she’s a really consistent player so congrats for the week.’

Pliskova, the former world No. 1, said after the match: ‘I mean, definitely not the best day in this tournament.

‘I think Iga was playing great tennis today and all the week. Congratulations to her and her team.

‘You have days like this in tennis where things are not going your way. That was the day today I still tried but it was just not working for me. I will just quickly forget about today.

‘I had some great matches here. Final is always a great week, great tournament.’

‘Pliskova just didn’t show up,’ Hantuchova told Amazon Prime after the match. ‘Nothing to take away from Swiatek, she was brilliant, focussed from the first point.

‘With Karolina, it’s been happening the last couple of years. So many times we think she’s playing great tennis, she can go all the way in the Slams as well and suddenly she has days like this.

‘She didn’t even try to do anything about it. That’s what is kind of frustrating for me. When your plan A is not working, hit it with more shape, don’t make it too complicated, hit it in the middle of the court, change up something – at least attempt to change things up when things aren’t going your way.’
