“Big trees catch a lot of wind,” said Holland’s Lidewij Welten for the soon-to-be 10-time EuroHockey champions at the 2019 tournament.
Welten was speaking after Holland had romped to an 8-0 victory over England, the biggest win in a women’s semi-final and a record defeat for Mark Hager’s side.
“It’s a Dutch phrase which means when people know you,” added Welten, “they always have an opinion about you. It’s not always the nicest opinion but that’s okay. That’s the curse of being a big tree but it also has a lot of benefits.”
