England squad Euro 2021 announcement live: Latest updates as 26-man selection confirmed

Countdown to Euro 2020: Daily briefing

Follow all the latest updates after Gareth Southgate confirmed his final 26-man England squad for Euro 2020 today.

The big debate had been over which right-back the Three Lions would be heading into the tournament without; ultimately the manager has chosen all four of them, with Trent Alexander-Arnold making the cut as well as Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker.

Now the expectation will be on at least one of them playing a different rule to usual during the course of the competition, as Southgate bids to get the best out of the talent at his disposal. Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins were among those omitted from the final squad.

Every other squad for Euro 2020 will also be finalised and confirmed today, with Southgate far from the only one having named a larger provisional squad – and attention will now turn to the warm-up games and upcoming friendlies as the fitness of players are assessed ahead of the tournament starting next week.

SOUTHGATE ON THE RETURN OF FANS

Southgate has spoken about how excited he is for the return of fans this summer.

He said: “It’s exciting for the players to be playing at Wembley and with fans in the stadium – we’re looking forward to that,” he said.

“I know some of the clubs have played in front of fans but we haven’t had that opportunity yet, so we’re really looking forward to it.

“It’s a great shame some players haven’t played for England in front of fans. Some who have made their debuts haven’t had family there.

“The fans are such a missing piece. If you’ve waited all your life to play for England, you want to invite your family – and we haven’t been able to do that.

“We won’t win matches just because we’re at home, we need to play well. We’ve seen over the last 18 months, it hasn’t been the same without full stadiums, so we hope with the fans coming back the fans will have an influence on that.”

SOUTHGATE’S COMBATIVE RESPONSE ON ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAGA

When asked about Alexander-Arnold, the England boss said: “I spoke with Trent about three weeks ago. So where the stories over the last couple of weeks that have ended up with lots of strange headlines, lots of strange stories, I’ve got no idea where they’ve come from.

“Even last night we were still dealing with that. I really don’t understand it. For me it’s no drama, I accept it’s what I have to deal with as the England manager.

“But we’re having to speak to Trent last night and tell him ‘we don’t know where this is all coming from, it’s nonsense’.”

TRIPPER ON BEING SELECTED

Now it’s Kieran Trippier speaking to the press.

“It’s a very special moment for myself. I know the competition I’ve got from the other right-backs but it’s just about playing well for my club which I felt I’ve done this season.

“There’s four quality right-backs and as Gareth said we can play in different positions. We just want to do what’s best for the team.”

SOUTHGATE ON MAGUIRE AND HENDERSON INJURIES

“They’ve both got a bit to do to be available. But we think that the fact that they’ve got the possibility to play a part and that they’re such great individuals, we felt the opportunity to have those two with us was a straight forward one really.”

SOUTHGATE ON TAKING FOUR RIGHT-BACKS

“We went through this last week. yes we have four players who sometimes play at right-back for their clubs. But Reece James has played at right wing-back, Kyle Walker can play in the centre of a three.

“If I could have picked a fifth or sixth right-back then I probably would have done!

“We need adaptability, good professionals, good players, tactically adept players.”
