Brazil vs Germany LIVE: 2020 Tokyo Olympics team news and latest build-up today

Brazil’s Men soccer squad prepare for Olympic debut against Germany

After the Women’s tournament kicked off football at the 2020 Olympics on Wednesday – Team GB picking up an impressive victory – the Men’s event has followed suit on Thursday with Mexico and New Zealand among the early winners.

Now it’s the turn of two of the most storied international sides to step up as Brazil face Germany in the Nissan Stadium at Yokohama. As usual, these are U23 squads but with three overage players apiece involved – legendary right-back Dani Alves is one such selection for the South Americans. Notable names in each squad for Premier League followers include Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, Everton’s Richarlison and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz from Brazil. Germany’s squad is almost entirely domestic-based, with one exception.

Also in Group D are Ivory Coast and Saudi Arabia, with the top two nations going through to claim a quarter-final spot.

Both these nations are among the favourites to win Olympic Gold, along with the likes of Spain in the Men’s tournament.

Follow all the latest updates from Brazil against Germany at Tokyo 2020 below:

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

68 mins: The free-kick is whipped in by Alves as Germany look to re-group following the sending off. It’s punched away unconvincingly for a corner by Muller.

Malcom’s corner is poor and Germany can clear their lines, but they have very little in the way of an outlet now.

Brazil dominating the ball.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

65 mins: SUB! Brazil’s Claudinho goes off and is replaced by Malcom.

RED CARD! Brazil 3-1 Germany (Arnold)

63 mins: Oh dear. Germany down to ten men as Max Arnold is shown a second yellow card for a late tackle on Dani Alves. Perhaps a little harsh, looks more like a coming together than a clear foul.

That could well end any hopes Germany have of getting something from this game.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

62 mins: Kruse thought he was in behind the Brazil defence for a moment there. His eventual cross was blocked but he was offside anyway.

The tempo of the game has just dropped off slightly in the last few minutes. Don’t blame the Brazil players, they haven’t stopped running for an hour.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

59 mins: Will that rather fortunate Germany goal jolt them into life? If they can somehow score another one then it really is game on.

Richarlison gallops down the left-hand side and is brought down by Stach. He goes in the book too.

The resulting free-kick leads to a scramble in the box before the Germans somehow get it clear.

GOAL! Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany (Amiri, 56)

Where has that come from?!

A nightmare for Brazil keeper Santos. Richter let’s fly but it’s blocked. It drops to Amiri who has a speculative effort on the volley from the edge of the box. It bounces before reaching Santos but he still can’t get across his goal in time as it somehow finds the bottom corner.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

56 mins: After a bright start to the second half, it’s Brazil who are back in control now.

A ball down the side of the German defence finds Cunha. He reaches it and then clips it back for Claudinho who is breaking his neck to get into the box but his shot is wayward.

Moments later Dani Alves is in acres of space to fizz in a low cross into the box, only for Muller to cut it out before it can reach Richarlison at the back post.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

53 mins: Cunha just can’t find his goal! Antony skips beyond a challenge and lays in Guimaraes. He finds Cunha but the shot is straight into the chest of Muller.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

52 mins: Germany definitely look sharper now. You can only imagine the half-time team talk Stefan Kuntz will have given them.

Brazil continue to press high up the pitch but the Germans appear a bit more assured on the ball. I suppose the pressure is off now that they’re three goals down.

The Olympic champions come forward though and Germany are on the defensive as Cunha lays it off for Antony. He fires towards goal but Udokahi is able to get his body in the way and it bounces up kindly for Muller.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

49 mins: Better from Germany at the start of the second half. Richter tries an effort from 25 yards out which flies wide, but Brazil are already being put under more pressure than they were in the entirety of the first half.

Richter then immediately on the front foot again as he forces a corner off Diego Carlos. Amiri plays it short but it’s eventually lofted into the box, only for Udokhai to head over.
