Eriksen collapse

The European Championships this summer was one of the best tournaments in the history of the game. It included many shocks, great goals and amazing performances.

Capped off with a final between Italy who won their first major title since 2006 and England who made their first final since 1966.

However during the tournament there was an incident which overshadowed much of the elation associated with the competition.

During the Denmark vs Finland game, the Danish talisman Christian Eriksen collapsed and had to have his life saved after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The incident became a global news story in which cameras focused in on distraught fans in the ground, the concerned players and even the player’s family members in a very desperate situation.

Braithwaite discusses the incident

One of the players on the pitch was Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite.

The former Middlesbrough man described the situation and the emotions tied to it.

“What was meant to be the biggest sports event in Danish history turned out just to be a nightmare. What happened that night shocked a lot of people,” said the forward.

“There was one moment I looked at (Eriksen) and he was gone.

“When you look at a body where the person is dead, you have no doubt. You know right away. That is what I saw.

“I felt it was the only thing I could do in that moment. Turn to God.

“We had all the doctors working on him and that image is something that I don’t wish for anyone to see.”

Eriksen left the field conscious and later posted an image to his Instagram page showing him in recovery to put fans’ nerves at ease.

It was a moment that will stay with the millions who saw it around the world for a long time and bring into focus, the dangers associated with sport.
