Antonio Rudiger outlines when he will open talks over new Chelsea deal

Rudiger impressing with Chelsea

Rudiger has been on Chelsea’s books since July of 2017. The German, though, has endured a fairly mixed stint during his time at Stamford Bridge.

All told, Rudiger has featured 148 times in all competitions for Chelsea, across which he has scored seven goals and provided three assists.

However, throughout much of Frank Lampard’s time at the club, Rudiger proved something of a fringe player.

During the first half of the current campaign, for example, the stopper was afforded just two Premier League appearances.

Such a lack of minutes even led to speculation that Rudiger was set for a move to PSG during the winter transfer window.

Rudiger, in the end, stayed put, but initially continued to struggle for regular Premier League action.

However, Frank Lampard was then sacked, before Thomas Tuchel took the reins at the back end of January.

And since the latter’s appointment as Chelsea boss, Rudiger has seen his game-time dramatically increase.

Rudiger’s contract situation

Despite his return to favour, though, Rudiger’s long-term future at Chelsea remains up in the air.

The German has just over a year left on his current contract at the Bridge.

But contract talks are still seemingly yet to take place. When drawn on Rudiger earning a new contract recently, Thomas Tuchel stated:

“Nothing is better than what is doing for a new contract. If he wants to have a new contract he has our full support to stay at the club. He is speaking with his performances; he has been amazing since day one.

Now, Rudiger has responded to these comments and shed some light on when/if contract talks will take place.

And, when responding to Tuchel’s above statement, Rudiger suggested that no talks will take place over a new deal till after the Euros:

“That’s nice and I’m happy too.

“You always make your decisions to some extent dependent on the coaching staff, but in the long term you can never rely on them anyway.

“After the European Championships, we can talk.”
