Amid Joe Willock standstill, Newcastle turn attentions to Aaron Ramsey

As Mikel Arteta provides Joe Willock future update, Newcastle make Aaron Ramsey enquiry

Speculation stemming from the European media on Monday suggests that Newcastle United may have identified an alternative target to Arsenal star Joe Willock.

Gunners starlet in demand

Midfield talent Willock of course spent the 2nd half of last season playing his trade at St. James’ Park, after struggling for game-time under Mikel Arteta’s watch at the Emirates.

And the 21-year-old quickly went on to remind viewers of his unquestionable talents, racking up a hugely impressive 8 goals in 14 Premier League appearances for the Magpies.

In turn, it has since come as little surprise to see speculation spread that those in a position of power on Tyneside have set their sights on a permanent deal for Willock.

Thus far, however, the Magpies have failed to meet Arsenal’s understandably considerable asking price.

Speaking on the back of his side’s friendly defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, during which Willock was unlucky not to be awarded what looked a completely legitimate equaliser, meanwhile, Mikel Arteta was drawn on the future of both the midfielder, and the rest of the Gunners’ transfer-linked stars.

And the Spaniard, in point blank refusing to rule out an exit for Willock, went on to explain:

‘I do not know (if they are leaving).’

‘I am going to coach them and train them, and respect and look after everybody, because they are our players.’

‘Hopefully, they can have their minds here, and prepare here, because they are Arsenal players, and our job is to make them as good as we can.’

Bianconeri star eyed

As outlined above, though, if the latest rumours making their way across the continent on Monday are anything to go by, then, despite Arteta’s comments, Newcastle appear ready to look elsewhere in the club’s search for midfield reinforcements.

The info comes courtesy of the reliable Romeo Agresti of Goal, who confirms that Steve Bruce and co. have begun ‘sounding out’ a deal for Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey.

Ramsey, of course formerly of Arsenal himself, has endured an altogether underwhelming spell in Italy to date, with Juve understood to be open to  the Welshman’s sale this summer.

The hierarchy at St. James’ Park, in turn, have made first contacts with their counterparts at the Allianz Stadium.

And though discussions, to this point, have proven ‘very informal’, the Magpies appear ready to step up their interest over the coming weeks.
